McCain Tries To Grab the History Flag From Obama

Summary: Today presumptive Republican Presidential nominee John McCain announced his choice for the Vice President: Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. In today’s WMC Commentary, Tanya Melich argues that the selection is not indicative of a real commitment either to women’s issues or to finding a qualified woman candidate, noting, “McCain is attempting to present Palin as a symbol that the Republican Party supports women.” Melich argues that Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutcheson “was McCain’s logical choice.” Instead, he chose Palin, Melich asserts, because “McCain hopes that by picking a woman he can show he’s open to doing things differently, but his selection is window dressing and insulting to anyone who knows that he opposes equal pay for equal work legislation and opposes a woman’s right to choose.” Melich goes on to discuss the GOP’s War AgainstWomen, and McCain’s advisor Charles Black’s heavy involvement in anti-woman policies within the GOP. In closing, Melich writes,”John McCain may think he can seduce American voters by having [Palin] by his side, but… Sarah Palin, the McCain Trojan filly, will not fool American women.”
